G=Goals O=Outlook A=Authentic T=Truth (#coateisaGOAT)
As an educator, I’ve always looked forward to the new school year. It’s like hitting the reset button — a fresh chance to improve, grow, and refocus. Maybe that’s why education is such a perfect career for someone like me who’s not exactly neurotypical and gets bored easily. Each year brings new challenges, new students, and new opportunities to reinvent myself.
Over the years, I’ve realized I need to trick my brain into staying excited — even about things I’ve tried over and over again, like losing that stubborn 20 pounds. Consistency and self-discipline have never been my strong suits. But lately, I’m learning to embrace the truth: life is a marathon, not a sprint.
Somewhere in childhood, I developed a false sense of urgency and impulsiveness. I used to make big decisions — even life-changing ones — too quickly. Let’s just say, I picked my first husband the same way I might pick out a pair of pants… without much deliberation. And while my midlife reality isn’t exactly where I imagined I’d be, I’m deeply grateful for every twist and turn. I truly believe the Lord has me exactly where I’m meant to be.
This year, I’m extra excited about one of our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) — we’re revisiting Atomic Habits by James Clear. It’s the perfect moment to recommit to my habits and lean into what I call the Coate Mindset — intentional practices that help me show up as the best version of myself.
Over time, I’ve let some of those good habits slip, so I’m using this blog (and my social media) to hold myself accountable and share my journey. If you want to join me, here are a few of my favorite tools that I’ll be using to stay on track:
- 📚 Atomic Habits by James Clear – My go-to book for building small, lasting changes.
- 📖 PPP Home Planner – A daily planner to help keep me on track.
- ⏰ Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod – Helps me set the tone for the day.
If you’ve been struggling to stay consistent, maybe this is your sign to start fresh. Whether it’s the school year or simply the season you’re in, there’s no better time to create habits that move you closer to the life you want.
Let’s walk this path together. Share your own habit goals in the comments or connect with me on my social platforms using my Linktree — I’d love to cheer you on.
I’m learning to embrace the truth: life is a marathon, not a sprint.
With love and purpose,
Maggie
