The Good You Can’t See Yet

Today I watched the Little House on the Prairie episodes where Mary goes blind. I’ve seen them before, but this time something different stood out to me—something deeper.

When Mary first loses her sight, everything she knew about herself changes. Her independence, her dreams, her sense of purpose—it all feels shattered. And when her parents, Charles and Caroline, decide to send her to a school for the blind, she resists. She’s angry, afraid, and hurting. She can’t see how anything good could possibly come from her pain.

But step by step, in a place she never wanted to be, God began to unfold something new.

At that school, Mary didn’t just learn to read Braille—she learned to hope again. She found friendship, strength, and a deeper kind of faith. She met Adam, and together they went on to start a new school for the blind in Winoka, Dakota—helping others find light in their own darkness.

A classroom scene showing a young girl, standing and interacting with another girl who appears to be learning Braille, while other students are seated around them.

There’s a powerful moment at the end of one episode where Mary closes with a prayer she’s written in Braille. It’s such a simple, quiet scene—but it captures something holy. This young woman who once cried out in anger had learned to talk to God again. The very thing she thought had ruined her life became the avenue through which she shared her greatest gifts with her community.

That’s what God does.

He takes what feels like loss and turns it into purpose. He reshapes our broken plans into something beautiful—something that blesses others too.

Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.”

It doesn’t always look like good at first. It doesn’t always feel like good in the middle. But in time, His goodness always shows up.

Maybe you’re walking through something right now that doesn’t make sense. Maybe, like Mary, you can’t see the good just yet. Hold steady. Trust that He’s working it out in ways you can’t imagine.

Because sometimes the story that feels like the end… is really just the beginning of something new.

The good you can’t see yet is already on its way.

  1. I feel that exact same way through the storm that I am going through with myself and with Ronnie. A piece that passes all understanding. I love your writing and you, Maggie!
